We are very saddened to hear of the recent death of John Denby, an enthusiastic and very generous supporter of the Festival over the years.
I remember John as a very gentle and kind man; humble, modest and unassuming in his knowledge of life and music. He was at the heart of the community and highly regarded in his field as the founder of law firm Denby & Co. in Ulverston.
He had a particular love for Chopin, which we discussed at length in our post-concert receptions. He also chatted frequently to my late mother over the phone; mum spoke very fondly of him and always urged me to ring him – which I of course did. I always enjoyed his warm conversation and dry humour.
He will be sorely missed at Festival concerts and in the town. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and colleagues at this sad time.
